SCEPTIC TEL
Seeking Confirmation Of The Paranormal....

Orbs

Photographing Orbs

I know what you're thinking "Tel's a sceptic he's just gunna say that orbs are specs of dust, or rain drops, or something like that"; well maybe you're not thinking that but hey I ain't no clairvoyant :)

The thing is I am sceptical about orbs. I'd never even heard of an orb until I started watching Most Haunted and now it seems every man and his dog has captured an orb on a number of pictures. This recent surge in people photographing orbs is commonly associated to the modern compact design of digital cameras. There is a theory that due to the flash being so close to the lens (due to the compact size of the camera) it is more prone to pick up dust, insects, etc, which will appear in a picture as an orb. There may be some truth in this as it seems that since I got my current camera my appearance of orbs does seem to have increased. But then perhaps this is due to the technology that the digital camera uses allowing us to see things that we could not see with the old 35mm cameras.

There's loads of articles on the net about why orbs aren't paranormal phenomena so I won't go on about it because...well what's the point when you can read someone else's well written and researched article.

So I'm sceptical or rather questioning. Instead of just taking this theory as gospel I gave it some thought and have made some observations.

It appears that my camera will pick up more orbs when there is a flurry of activity. For example this picture shows a gymnastics competition when there was a lot of physical activity and there are loads of faint orbs:

Also in this picture there was again a lot of physical activity and instead of numerous orbs theres just one great, vibrant orb:

I have another picture of my children that show a number of orbs around their feet when they had been running around indoors.

So perhaps orbs have something to do with energy either from this world or the other. I read an interesting theory on the net that Spirit draws energy from the sources available to it whether that be from a power source (i.e electricity, batteries, etc), heat source, activity, etc to give it the energy to "perform". I'd not really thought about it that way before....

I remained sceptical about orbs until I saw this picture that Rosie had taken at Michelem Priory

This is very different from any other orb picture that I had seen before as it has colour and depth. It also appears to have a face (or two) which is kinda eerie. This has changed my opinion of orbs and although I remain sceptical about the majority of orbs I see this one has made me believe that there is something paranormal about the phenomena of orbs.

Filming Orbs

An example (not my footage)

They always capture an orb on Most Haunted but in all the investigations I have been on I have only ever seen one that was caught on film. It was quite impressive because it shot out of the door of a room that a seance had just been conducted in. It moved in a random but defined way, which was really good very unlikely to be an insect or dust. The only thing that got me was that it moved around the doors, at the time I thought it was cool and evidence that it was an orb (surely no insect could move like that!) but in hind sight I would've thought that it'd just pass straight through the doors. Who knows I need to see more.

Anyway I'm more likely to believe a filmed orb than I am a photographed one due to being able to study the movement and the lack of reasonable explanation as to what the phenomena is.

Visual Sighting
I believe I saw an orb at Faversham Gunpowder Mill but can't be 100% sure. What I need is an orb to move straight across my line of vision so that I can clearly focus on it and follow it's movement, it would also be nice to have time to point it out to others and for them to see it too. Then I'd be convinced that I'd seen an orb....probably :)

Rosie has claimed to have seen orbs and of course I have no reason to doubt her. Her most interesting visual sighting was in our house, unfortunately I wasn't there, typical. It was in our bedroom and instead of being a sphere it resembled a flickering white, foot long ribbon, flapping in the wind, both in shape and in movement and apparently was visible for a while as it moved in a directional path from the ceiling down towards the end of the bed, which would amount to about 10 foot . Upon some research it was discovered that this kind of light anomaly is referred to as a streamer. If only I was there....

How the streamer may have looked (for illustration purposes only):
